If your break up was filled with bitterness and angst, you might not want to give your ex girlfriend a gift, but in the case that it wasn't or you're hoping that perhaps giving her a gift might bring her back. Here's something to think about.
If your break up was recent and close to the holidays, it might still seem like a good idea to give her a gift. You want to show you still care and perhaps you have already got her present lined up.
It can be a bit complicated now that you're separated. If you withhold, and she gives a gift, that will make you feel bad for not getting her one. Here's the thing though, although you still want to seem like the good guy. I suggest NOT getting her anything. In fact, you should be keeping your distance if she is not willing to take you back right now.
As nice as it will seem to get her something this holiday, what kind of message will that be giving her? That you're a sweet and nice guy. Great... but she doesn't want this sweet and nice guy anymore, not as a romantic partner anyway, but maybe she'll hang onto him as a friend instead since he is sooo nice!
This is not how you want her to think. You don't need to send her a note or tell her that you won't allow yourself to be her "friend" anymore.
Ok, so it's probably not always possible to avoid her this holidays. So don't, wait for her to come to you and see what she says or does. If you're just a good natured person, get her something as a backup, but don't give it to her unless she gives you something.
This will make things even and she will know you won't just bend over backwards to please her.

After years of watching my uncle verbally abuse my aunt, I finally had to do something about it. She was too committed to her family to ever leave him but he was brutal somedays.
